We make car scrapping easy

Helping with the full car scrap process

You can trust us to handle everything here at Scrap Car Network, from quote right through to collection. The process itself is very simple: all you have to do to kickstart it is enter your postcode and car reg into the fields on our site. We’ll give you an instant scrap car quote on the spot, showing you the best price from the nearest local scrapyard.

A friendly member of our team will then be in touch to arrange hassle free collection of your car, right from your driveway. At the appointed time and date, we’ll swing by with one of our dedicated collection vehicles, collect any relevant paperwork and the keys, and then be on our way. We’ll finalise the payment upon collection, so you’ll never be waiting too long that cash for your car to hit your bank account.

We’ll also send you a copy of the official Certificate of Destruction, which acts as proof that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency no longer holds you legally responsible for the car. Once the DVLA has their copy of this document, they’ll also refund you on any remaining car tax you owe. That’s all there is to it!

Just don't forget to:

Make sure that you’ve got your keys car and paperwork (such as the V5C and any applicable SORN) ready for our collection agents. We’ll need to have easy access to the car too, so make sure that it’s not locked away in your garage, or blocked by another vehicle.

Fill out Section 9 of your V5C (“Selling Your Vehicle To A Motor Trader, Insurer Or Dismantler.”) and send it off to the DVLA.

So, you’re probably asking, how can we provide the best prices here at Scrap Car Network?

Easy. That’s because we’re one of the biggest partnerships of scrap car dealers in the country, spanning scrap car breakers all over the UK. That means no matter where you live in Britain, when you use our service you can rely on us to connect you with the best priced scrap yard near you, keeping things simple and convenient for everyone, and ensuring that you’re always getting maximum cash for your car.

We know that trustworthiness is sometimes a concern when you scrap your car, so we’ve taken care to make sure we’re only partnered with reputable scrap car dealers. Every last one of our partners is registered as an Authorised Treatment Facility, so that you can expect not only the best deal on your End of Life Vehicle, but also the highest standards of punctuality, reliability, and customer service.

That means you can have peace of mind that there will be no last-minute changes to the price when we come to collect, which is a well-known tactic used by less scrupulous dealers. It can be quite frustrating (not to mention intimidating) to have to haggle with someone on your doorstep, and that’s what so many of them count on when they try and knock a few quid off the price at the last moment.

You’ll have none of that from us here at Scrap Car Network - when we give you a quote, we mean it. The only thing you need to do in return is make sure that you don’t do anything that might affect the value of your scrap car. So, for example, try and resist the temptation to remove any parts from it!

No need to worry about paperwork

We know how dull and time-consuming paperwork is, so we’ve made sure to save you from as much of it as possible here at Scrap Car Network.

Say goodbye to filling out endless cookie cutter forms on countless comparison websites - we only need your car reg and postcode to give you an instant online quote, and then it’s all go from there!

You can trust us to take care of most of the nitty-gritty on your behalf, and of course we won’t waste any time in getting you that all-important Certificate of Destruction, so that you can have total confidence that your car is being safely and efficiently recycled.

Fast, free nationwide collection

No matter where you are in the country, you can count on hassle-free collection of your car, right from your driveway.

The sheer size of our network means that no matter where you are in the country, we’ll be able to connect you with a scrap car dealer who’s never too far away. So you don’t need to worry about how to get your car to the scrapyard - we’ll take care of all that for you. Just let us know where and when you’d like to pick it up, and we’ll swing by to scoop it up in one of our dedicated collection vehicles. Don’t worry about what sort of state it’s in - we’ll be able to collect it whether it’s been smashed up in a collision, or it’s just become too expensive for you to renew its MOT certificate.

Authorised Treatment Facility

Our network is made up exclusively of Authorised Treatment Facilities - scrap car dealers who are licensed and regulated by the Environment Agency.

Authorised Treatment Facilities are the only ones legally permitted to scrap your car, so we take care not to partner with anyone else here at Scrap Car Network. That way, we can be certain that we’re always delivering the highest standards of trustworthiness, transparency, and customer service that we’ve come to be known for.

Car recycling

Here at Scrap Car Network, we’re committed to providing you with the greenest, most responsible way to scrap your car.

What’s more, we’ve got the in-house expertise, equipment and facilities to do so.

During the car recycling process, we’ll examine your scrap car for anything that could have any sort of practical or financial value, and ensure that it’s removed and repurposed through the proper channels, ultimately minimising the amount of unnecessary waste.

Our current car recycling rate stands at about 95%, but our goal is to eventually get this up to 100%, eliminating vehicle waste entirely!

MOT Failures

Let’s be honest - MOTs aren’t cheap. And they’re often even more expensive than they appear to be at first, since as many as 40% of cars fail on their first attempt (according to estimates by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency).

So if your car repeatedly fails its test, you might understandably decide that it becomes more money and hassle than it’s worth. The good news is - that’s where we can help.

MOT failures constitute a significant proportion of the 10,000 cars we deal with every month here at Scrap Car Network. In fact, we’ll take your car no matter what condition it’s in - we process non-runners, ELV (end of life vehicles), mechanically faulty cars, accident damaged cars, salvage cars, and everything in between.

Certificate of Destruction

Your Certificate of Destruction is a hugely important document when it comes to scrapping your car.

In a nutshell, it serves as legal proof that you’ve scrapped your car, and that you’re therefore no longer responsible for it. We’ll always make sure to get yours to you in a matter of weeks, but we also recommend that you contact the DVLA yourself as well, so that you can have total peace of mind.

It’s not uncommon for car owners to overlook the Certificate of Destruction once they think their car has been scrapped, but don’t make the same mistake! You should never just take someone’s word that your car has been scrapped. In fact, unless you’ve got that document to hand, it’s wise to always assume that the DVLA still holds you legally responsible for your car.

Without a Certificate of Destruction, the DVLA will still hold you liable for car tax - even if you don’t physically have the car anymore, which usually results in an £80 fine. And some unscrupulous dealers have been known to sell on End-of-Life vehicles to new buyers instead of scrapping them. If your car is caught out on the roads after it’s supposed to have been scrapped, that will have some pretty serious legal repercussions.

So it’s really important that no matter who you choose to scrap your car, you always make sure to get your Certificate of Destruction. And it has to be exactly that name - don’t get caught out with fake documents like a Certificate of Collection, or a Document of Destruction. A COD by any other name is not officially recognised, and won’t offer you any legal protection!

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It’s essentially a formal declaration to the DVLA that you intend to take your car off the roads.

(It has to be literally off the roads too, which means it can’t be parked on the street, but rather in a private driveway or garage.) There’s no charge for a SORN, and as soon as it’s active, you can then pause your payments on road tax and car insurance.

Crucially though, you have to have informed the DVLA, so that they can issue you with an active SORN. It’s not enough to just put your vehicle in the garage and then stop making the payments on it immediately - if the SORN isn’t yet active (or if you’ve not got one at all), then as far as the DVLA and your insurer is concerned, you’re still liable for that money!

Plus, don’t forget that once your SORN is active, it’s illegal to drive the car anywhere at all, save for the sole exception of a pre-booked MOT test. You can’t even drive it to a scrapyard to be recycled, so don’t be the one to make that mistake - not unless you want to be looking at the business end of a £2500 fine!

Alongside your Certificate for Destruction, your V5C is one of the few very important bits of paperwork that you’ll need to keep track of when you scrap your car.

It’s referred to by several names, including V5C, Vehicle Registration Document, and vehicle log book. Despite that last moniker though, it’s not technically a book, but a slip of paper.

It acts as legal proof that your car is registered with the DVLA, and shows who is the registered keeper of the vehicle. If it was issued in 2012 or anytime afterwards, it’ll be red. All V5Cs issued before 2012 will be blue. The layout was updated again in April 2019. It basically tells you what the DVLA understands to be true about your car, and yourself, so it needs to be kept updated at all times. You’ll need to update it if you make any changes to your car’s characteristics - such as its engine type, its chassis, or even something as simple as its colour - or if there are any changes to your personal details, such as your legal name or address.

The V5C therefore provides a quick and useful way to let the DVLA know that you’ve scrapped your car, as you simply have to fill in Section 9 and send it off to them in the post. However, if for whatever reason you can’t find your vehicle logbook, don’t worry. Lost V5Cs are very common! The good news is that you can scrap your car without the V5C, but you’re still legally obliged to let the DVLA know in writing.

They’ll need to know:

  • Your details
  • The details of your car (registration number, make, model)
  • Our details
  • The date of sale (from you to us)

That should tell them all they need to know for them to issue your Certificate of Destruction, and free you from legal responsibility for your car.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act of 2013 is primarily intended to cut down on scrap metal theft and fraud in the sector, and it brought in a raft of sweeping changes to address the issue.

We won’t go into exhaustive detail on every single one of them, but as far as drivers are concerned, one of the key changes was to ban the payment of cash for cars.

It’s an undeniably catchy term, so it’s widely used in the industry, but technically it’s been illegal for a long time now, so be very wary of anyone offering to pay you cash in hand for your car! Instead, the law requires scrap car dealers to pay by traceable methods like cheque or BACS (bank transfer), which is exactly how we do things here at Scrap Car Network.

How much money can I get for scrapping my car?

How much you’ll get for your scrap car depends on a whole range of factors. Most of these are well outside your control, so they’re not anything to worry about.

Some of the main factors which affect how much cash you’ll get include:
• Supply and demand of the scrap metal market
• The make and model of the car
• The size and weight
• Its age
• Whether or not it’s had parts removed
• The location of the scrap yard taking it

One of the main ways you can ensure you maximise the value of your car is by making sure you don’t take it to pieces before you send it off to be scrapped. Removing particularly heavy or critical parts like the engine will have a serious impact on how much scrap yards are willing to pay for it.

Location is also a hugely influential factor. After all, for scrap yards, processing your car involves a cost-benefit analysis. The further they have to travel in order to collect your car, the more they’ll have to charge to cover their overheads.

That’s why the closest local scrap yards are able to offer the best value for your end of life vehicle, and why location is always a high priority of ours when we're calculating your instant scrap car quote.

If you’d like, you can turn to our blog for a more detailed breakdown of what affects scrap car prices.

What documents do I need to scrap my car?

You’ll be pleased to hear you don’t need that much paperwork to scrap your car, and it’s generally a lot more simple than making a private sale.

The main documents you’ll need include:
• V5C logbook or registration certificate
• The service history
• The latest MOT certificate
• SORN (if applicable)

If you’ve got any additional paperwork, such as anything to do with the vehicle finance, that’s worth handing over too. You can provide all this to a friendly member of our collection team when we swing by to pick up your vehicle (And of course, it makes everything a whole lot quicker and more simple if you can give us the keys).

What happens if I’ve lost my V5C?

If you’ve lost your V5C, some people may advise you to apply for a new one from the DVLA, at the cost of £25. However, this isn’t strictly necessary, as you don’t actually need it to scrap your car. (You don’t even need it to privately sell your vehicle, although undeniably it makes it a bit more difficult. Most buyers will be wary of buying the car unless they see proper physical documentation!)

The reason you don’t need it to scrap your car is because all details are checked on the DVLA database. This means that as long as you can prove you’re the registered keeper of the vehicle, and all the information is up to date, we can recycle your car without your physical V5C logbook.

What we do advise, though, is separately getting in touch with the DVLA yourself to let them know you’ve scrapped your car.

Here’s what you’ll need to let them know:
• Your car registration number
• The make and model
• The exact date of sale
• The name and address of the scrapyard

For more information, feel free to check out our post on what happens if you lose your V5C .

How do you scrap your car for money?

Over a million cars are scrapped in the UK each year, and finding the best price used to be a fairly intensive process - involving multiple phone calls to separate scrapyards, or whiling away valuable free time on comparison websites.

Thankfully, now that we’re well into the digital age, it’s all easier than ever!

The process is slightly different depending on whether or not you want to keep any parts from your car. We’ve into full extensive detail on our post on how to scrap your car , but here are the basics.

If you want to scrap your car without keeping any parts, you have to:
• Apply to take off the registration number (if you want to keep it)
• Scrap your car at an Authorised Treatment Facility
• Hand over your V5C or vehicle logbook, but keep the yellow slip
• Inform the DVLA, and get your Certificate of Destruction

If you want to keep some parts from your car before you scrap it, you must:
• Obtain a SORN through the DVLA
• Apply to take off the registration number (if you’d like)
• Remove the parts you want
• Scrap the rest at an Authorised Treatment Facility
• Hand over your V5C or vehicle logbook, but keep the yellow slip
• Give them the SORN, if it’s still in effect
• Inform the DVLA and get your Certificate of Destruction

It’s worth remembering, though, that removing parts from your vehicle will have a pretty serious impact on its value to the scrap yard, which means you’ll end up with less cash for your car. For that reason alone, it’s a job worth tackling only if you’ve got the professional expertise necessary to remove and sell them!
