By law, all vehicles recycled by an ATF must be issued with a CoD. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The CoD is passed to the previous owner of the car (you!) to keep as proof that the car:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Is off the road for good<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Has been processed according to all legal requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Is no longer in your possession, or your responsibility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Any reputable car scrapping organisation will use an ATF, and will therefore be able to provide you with a CoD as part of their service<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What happens if I don\u2019t get a certificate of destruction?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-310 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Why-is-a-certificate-of-destruction-so-important-2.jpg\" alt=\"penalty notice\" width=\"820\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s important to get a certificate of destruction as proof that you no longer own or drive your old car.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Certificates of destruction are also an important way for the government to help support reputable car scrapping services, and to divert old cars away from unscrupulous dealers who might try to repurpose old cars illegally after telling the owners they\u2019re being scrapped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">If you do not get a certificate of destruction from your car scrapping firm, you can\u2019t be sure that you\u2019re not still linked &#8211; in legal terms &#8211; to your old car.
