It\u2019s really important to let the DVLA know when you\u2019re parting ways with your car, whether that\u2019s because you\u2019re selling it privately or scrapping it with someone like us here at Scrap Car Network. And if you\u2019re late to let them know, contrary to what many people think, they never backdate it. Selling your car in a private sale<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re the one who\u2019s selling your car, you\u2019ll be pleased to hear it\u2019s not actually you who has to fill in the forms. Most of the time it\u2019s the buyer who has to fill in the new registration information, with the consent of the seller (that\u2019s you, obviously). If you register the new owner online, you also need to make sure they have a copy the current V5C\u2019s section 10, or the V5C\/2. Once you\u2019ve got that, the rest of it can be safely disposed of.<\/p>\n

Scrapping your car<\/strong><\/p>\n

As we touched on above, if you\u2019re recycling your car with Scrap Car Network, we\u2019ll contact the DVLA on your behalf, but it\u2019s never a bad idea to do so yourself too. When you inform the DVLA online<\/a>, make sure you\u2019ve got the 11 digit reference number from the latest V5C (or vehicle logbook) to hand. Once you\u2019ve completed that, you\u2019ll never be waiting more than a few weeks for your Certificate of Destruction. You\u2019ll also get an email confirmation, at which point the DVLA will send you a refund cheque for any remaining money left on your vehicle tax. Of course, you might have your own reasons for not wanting to do things online. Happily, you don\u2019t have to – you can always choose to let the DVLA know by post instead.<\/p>\n

Selling your car in a private sale<\/strong><\/p>\n

All you need to do is get together with the buyer to fill out section 6 of the existing V5C, sign section 8, and then send the entire document off to the DVLA. Here\u2019s the address:<\/p>\n

From there, you should get a confirmation, and the buyer should receive the completed V5C\/2 section.<\/p>\n

Scrapping your car<\/strong><\/p>\n

Provided you\u2019ve got the logbook, get the insurance company or scrapyard to fill in the \u2018Sell, Transfer or Part-Exchange Your Vehicle\u2019 section. It shouldn\u2019t be too difficult to spot – it\u2019s the yellow bit. Send off the perforated section to the DVLA at the address we\u2019ve listed above.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, if you\u2019ve not got the V5C to hand, you\u2019ll need to write to the DVLA with:<\/p>\n

Your name and address
\nThe vehicle reg plate
\nIts model and manufacturer
\nThe exact date upon which you sold it
\nOur name and address (or that of the insurance company or scrapyard)<\/p>\n

Within 4 weeks, you\u2019ll get a letter and a Certificate of Destruction which says you\u2019re not the vehicle\u2019s keeper anymore, at which point you can breathe a sigh of relief. Once more, this is the point at which you get refunded any unused vehicle tax, too.<\/p>\n
