For loving them, cherishing them, and arguably most importantly, getting shedloads of presents from them. In order to do that though, you\u2019ve got to make it down to them first. Long journeys are par for the course for many people at this time of year, but that doesn\u2019t necessarily make them any easier. Don\u2019t worry though &#8211; we\u2019ve got a couple of tips that can help make that journey positively fly by, so you\u2019ll be enjoying Christmas dinner in no time. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Preparing your car for the trip<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the very top of your list to prepare will be the car itself. Poor car maintenance can cause you a lot of problems further down the line, and nobody wants to have a breakdown that might mean they have to prematurely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">scrap their car<\/span><\/a>. Here\u2019s a quick list of the most handy things to check before you set off:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your tyres &#8211; look at both tread and pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Water, coolant, and antifreeze levels in the engine<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Windscreen wiper blades<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rear lights and headlights<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The legal minimum tread depth for tyres is 1.6mm, but most authorities recommend a tread depth of at least 3mm. Worn tyres mean that in wet weather you can easily find yourself aquaplaning (a fancy term for skidding), whereas the wrong tyre pressure can similar affect steering and braking. Your engine might not cope too well unless it\u2019s got good reserves of all the most important fluids as well, so don\u2019t forget about that, and your wipers and lights need to be in good condition so that you can both see and be seen at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive alignnone wp-image-1725 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/santa-driving-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"santa driving\" width=\"800\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/santa-driving-compressed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/santa-driving-compressed-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/santa-driving-compressed-768x336.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Avoid tiredness on the road<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tiredness is one of the key enemies of the modern driver, so it\u2019s wise to do everything humanly possible in advance to avoid running out of energy while you\u2019re still on the road. Sleep experts advise getting at least seven hours of sleep for two days running in order to build your energy reserves for the big journey. Don\u2019t forget to take breaks when you\u2019re driving too, and increase their frequency according to how long the journey is. A good trick is to chew gum, as the repetitive process increases circulation and general alertness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, regardless if you\u2019re chewing or not, make sure you take a break if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019re yawning a lot<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">You start to feel stiff<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your eyes feel heavy<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019re day-dreaming, or staring fixedly at the car in front<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your car wanders out of lane (however briefly!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even if you don\u2019t feel any of the symptoms, listen to your gut feeling. If you have a nagging suspicion you should take a break, make sure you do. The alternative is far worse than a half-hour delay. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Stay fuelled up (and we don\u2019t mean the car)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"img-responsive alignnone wp-image-1719 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/happy-family-compressed.jpg\" alt=\"happy family\" width=\"800\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/happy-family-compressed.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/happy-family-compressed-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.scrapcarnetwork.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/happy-family-compressed-768x336.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019re a parent, you won\u2019t need us to tell you how vital snacks and drinks are. As well as bringing some for the little ones though, make sure you take some for yourself too, especially if you\u2019re the driver! Having vitamin-rich snacks and water on hand allows you to stay fed and watered for longer, so you can power on through the journey. Of course, the downside is that you might need to have more bathroom stops\u2026 but we\u2019ll leave the rationing to your discretion! <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Keep yourself and your passengers entertained<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This can be either a doddle or the hardest thing in the world, depending on the age of your passengers and what time of day you\u2019re leaving. Some people choose to leave early in the morning or later at night so that children are more likely to sleep through the majority of the journey. Failing that, though, CD audiobooks are always a good failsafe, if you can find an audiobook that everyone can agree upon. To be honest, they\u2019re still a good idea even if you\u2019re travelling alone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You might even consider another alternative; you can get foreign-language teaching audio CDs so you can do a bit of learning on your journey. You might be surprised at how much the journey whizzes by, and when you see Grandma this year you\u2019ll be able to say \u2018hi\u2019 to her in German! (It\u2019s \u2018hallo\u2019. Presumably the lessons on the actual CDs get more complex than that.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Plan your stops<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you\u2019ve made the journey several times before, it\u2019s wise to plan out where you\u2019ll stop along the way, even if they\u2019re only rough ballparks. If nothing else, this can give you a point of reference for bored children asking \u2018are we there yet?\u2019 It also helps you to manage your energy levels, stretch your legs, and give you all an opportunity for bathroom breaks. Depending on how late in the evening it is you\u2019re going, you might want to stop and have dinner somewhere along the way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of course, sometimes the strains of these sorts of journeys can be a little too much for your car.
