The government has announced that 140 electric cars and vans will be added to their transport fleet, as part of a \u00a35 million investment to reduce emissions.<\/p>\n
Fifteen government departments including the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office will use the plug-in vehicles, such as the electric Nissan LEAF. Four electric cars will also be supplied to the Government Car Service, which provides cars for ministers.<\/p>\n
The development is part of a wider demonstration of a commitment to green transport; the investment will also fund electric charge-points and encourage take-up in the public sector, including police forces and the NHS.<\/p>\n
Transport Minister Baroness Kramer described it as an \u2018important step\u2019, adding: \u2018These cars will save taxpayers money on running costs and will bring low emissions benefits to our fleet. Today\u2019s announcement proves that Britain is leading the electric charge while supporting the growth of this important industry\u2019.<\/p>\n
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander added: \u2018This is the right thing to do for both the environment and the taxpayer\u2019, whilst Business Minister Matthew Hancock said: \u2018We want to make the UK one of the best places in the world to design, manufacture and sell ultra-low emission vehicles. This important step demonstrates government\u2019s commitment to promoting the economic and environmental benefits of these cars\u2019.<\/p>\n
